Christopher Alty

A Human Rights Pioneer

Although Christopher’s interest in Human Rights was rarely expressed as such, he was always distressed at any abuse he learned of and this belief underpinned everything he undertook.

Following a First Class Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Queens College Cambridge, Christopher applied to do a PhD, based at the same College. In 1965 he took up a position as Lecturer in the newly formed Engineering Department at Warwick University where he teamed up with two colleagues to create a new course entitled Engineering Design for Appropriate Technology (EDAT).
